Prof. (Dr.) Nikhil Tandon is a world-renowned endocrinologist, researcher, and academician who currently
serves as the Interim Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. In
addition to this leadership role, he continues to head the Department of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and
Diabetes at AIIMS and serves as the Dean (Academic), steering the pedagogical standards of India’s
premier medical institution.
As a Vice President of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), Dr. Tandon
plays a pivotal role in shaping postgraduate medical education and assessment across the country.
Pioneering Research & Global Impact. Dr. Tandon is a prolific "clinician-scientist" whose work has
fundamentally altered the understanding of chronic diseases in South Asia.
• Genetic & Epidemiological Studies: He has led landmark genetic research into Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
(T2DM) and childhood obesity—the first of its kind in the region.
• Global Collaborations: He serves as the National Coordinator for the ADVANCE study (combating
diabetes and vascular risks) and is a key member of the steering committee for the CARRS Trial, funded
by the NIH, USA.
• International Policy: A frequent consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO), he sits on the
Technical Advisory Group for Diabetes and the NCD Regional Technical Advisory Group for South East
Asia.
Distinguished Awards & Recognitions
His lifelong dedication to medical excellence has earned him some of India’s and the world's most
prestigious honors:
❖ Padma Shri (2015): Awarded by the Government of India for his exceptional contributions to the
field of medicine.
❖ Dr. B.C. Roy Award (2005): Conferred in the category of Eminent Medical Teacher, recognizing
his influence on generations of Indian physicians.
❖ Academic Eminence: He is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India
(NASI), the Indian Academy of Sciences, and the Royal College of Physicians (London).
❖ Scholarly Legacy: With over 870 research papers and more than 100,000 citations, he remains
one of the most cited and influential medical researchers in the country.
