The Beginning
The birth of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences dates back to the year 1975,
when the republic was still very young and postgraduate medical education was still in its infancy.
The standards of postgraduate medical education varied from Himalayan highs to lows of
unspeakable despair.
The developed world,
taking cognizance of
these despicable
lows, had decided to
derecognize the
Indian degrees and
doctors. Alarmed at this global outcry, the Government of India gave birth to a new body, naming it
National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences.
The beginning was humble. A petite office in the basement of the National Medical Library and its
neighbouring building which housed the National Academy of Medical Sciences. Sitting next to
country’s mightiest medical institution, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in New Delhi, its
spirit rubbed its élan vital in no time upon the National Board.
Growing from strength to strength, inch by inch, the National Board of Examinations in
Medical Sciences is today blessed with quarters any medical education body should be proud of.
Surrounded by rich green
pastures that breathe life,
fitted with modern offices, it is
housed in a seven-storied
well-lit building in Dwarka, a
Delhi township named after
the fabled capital of god-king
Krishna, where the flora and
fauna stir the mind. No wonder, this young capital of the National Board, which was unveiled in 2006,
has been a birthing ground for many innovative ideas.
