The landmark decision of the Government of India to recognise private medical institutions for the award of postgraduate medical degrees has
made a great deal of difference to medical education in the country. To cater to the needs of our population, a very large number of private medical
institutions have been set up during the past three decades. They are now able to provide quality medical care and at the same time train postgraduate
students in various branches of medicine. Standardization of the training is being actively supervised by National Board of Examinations in Medical
Sciences and this has provided uniformity in standards. The National Board has therefore done much to standardise medical care in India.
To all those obtaining their degrees today, my advice is to look upon patients as human beings with problems rather than as disease entities.
Patients must trust their lives with you and you have to be worthy of that trust. I wish you a great future in the practice of medicine.
