Ringing in new academic programmes Table 2: New NBEMS-accredited
Academic Programmes
During the last few years, the Board has introduced
a number of new academic programmes with the objective of
fulfilling the felt needs of the community as well as bridging
the hopes of the doctors wishing to undergo further
advancement of knowledge and skills. These academic
programmes are listed in Table 2.
The philosophy driven by people’s welfare has led
to further new beginnings. On June 28, 2023, the day National
Board of Examination in Medical Sciences celebrated its 42nd
Foundation Day, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family
Welfare, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, launched 12 new academic
programmes (Table 3) in addition to the existing ones, taking
the tally to more than hundred.
Launch of NBEMS Diploma Programmes
The Medical Council of India had converted its
ongoing diploma programmes into degree programmes in Table 3: Launch of New NBEMS-accredited
Academic Programmes on June 28, 2023
2019 to overcome the shortfall of teaching faculty in the
country. To fill this void created by the discontinuation of
MCI diploma programmes, the government had asked
National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences to look
into the possibility of launching diploma programmes under
its aegis.
The governing body of National Board seized up
the challenge and following detailed consultations with NITI
Aayog, Medical Council of India and Ministry of Health and
Family Welfare took a decision of reviving the diploma
courses in the country. A blueprint was prepared, the government included the diploma courses in the
1st Schedule of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and the ball was set rolling with the NBEMS
diploma programmes being notified on August 20, 2020. A majority of NBEMS diploma programmes
shall be run in the government hospitals and district hospitals.
