Bridging the urban-rural divide
The vision, that the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences harbours, is
crystal clear. While envisioning India as a global hub of highly-trained proficient specialist doctors,
the National Board through its postgraduate medical education programme endeavours to inspire the
highest standards of healthcare across the urban-rural geographic areas setting aside the India-Bharat
divide. The idea is also to make good the demographic dividend of a young population pyramid that
the country is currently blessed with, and fashion new robust opportunities for those medical
graduates who wish to take wings, fly and be regarded as the best of specialist doctors serving the
global community.
A wide canvas of appraisals
The Board conducts a number of high stake national postgraduate medical entrance tests.
This includes the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for postgraduates (NEET-PG), National
Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for super specialties (NEET-SS), National Eligibility-cum-Entrance
Test for masters programmes in dental surgery (NEET-MDS), entrance examination for admission to
various Fellowship Programmes of National Board (FET) and Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test for
Bachelor of Pharmacy graduates to seek admissions in Masters programme.
The NEET-PG, in its various avatars, has become a benchmark to evaluate the graduate
medical candidates who seek to educate and train themselves as specialists in diverse disciplines of
basic sciences, community medicine, medical and surgical specialties.
NBEMS conduct a licensing exam for Indian citizens who obtain their primary medical
qualification from outside India, the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). The National
Board has been conducting this exam since it came into being in 2002. Similar licentiate examinations
are conducted for dental graduates and post graduates as well by NBEMS. NBEMS conducts the
Medical and Dental Registration Examinations for the Republic of Mauritius also.
In all, the National Board conducts close to a dozen medical examinations across the
country. Crafted by some of the best faculty members from each discipline, the examinations are
known for their fairness and equal opportunity for all. Even after the process is complete, a thorough
assessment is carried out to obviate any inaccuracies that might have crept in.
