           The Evolving Methodologies

           Computer based Examinations

The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences has been constantly evolving its
examination methodology. Many of its exams are conducted on a computer based platform, which

enables the Board to evaluate the cognitive domain of a candidate through image-based questions.

These exams mark a paradigm shift and are based out of clinical images, radiological images,
electrocardiograms, and other such practical aspects. The changeover has facilitated greater fairness

in the examinations by preventing leakage of question papers. The Board also captures the biometrics
of the candidates and ensures continuous closed circuit television surveillance during the examination

           to preclude unfair means.

           Generating transparency through meritocracy

Since 2010, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences has adopted centralized merit-

based counselling in the selection process. Candidates get to pick and choose the subject and
institution of their choice befitting their rank. This transparency has helped promote meritocracy. The

best candidates get their due at the time of selection which is conducted online.

Benefits of a Low Cost Model

The current postgraduate and postdoctoral programme of the National Board of Examinations in

Medical Sciences is a low-cost efficient model, where all stakeholders stand to benefit. Each of the

courses entail a nominal annual fee of Rs. 125,000, no capitation fee (which in some private
universities can go up to 20-50 times this sum), and a reasonable residency stipend for the candidate.

This allows meritorious candidates from humble backgrounds to make good their dreams. The
stipends paid by the institutions help the candidates survive their residency years. The stipend in each

institution matches the salaries paid by the respective State Governments to their resident doctors.

           The Innate Values

Respect for each stakeholder — be it the postgraduate medical students, teachers or medical

institutions, and the staff members of the board; and practicing the highest degree of transparency,

probity and accountability through an efficient and courteous consultative process are the mantras of
operation in National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. The board strives to ensure the

highest academic and clinical skill standards in their postgraduate and postdoctoral programmes and
           upgrade and update them periodically.
