stablished in the year 1975 with the vision of raising the bar of postgraduate medical
education in the country, the saga of National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences
is a narrative of out-of-box thinking, ingenuity, partnering with existing healthcare service
players, and carving new temples and new paradigms of learning across the rural-urban space. From
a modest, Cinderella-like beginning, this colourful voyage has taken many a storm, but battling
through challenging times the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences has emerged as
a guardian angel of postgraduate medical education in the country, stepping into territories where
nobody had gone
before. While
being an
autonomous body
of the Ministry of
Health and Family
Welfare,
Government of
India, the National
Board today offers
postgraduate
programmes in
ninety-nine
medical and
surgical specialties and subspecialties, many of which had a nascent beginning under its safeguard.
Breaking new ground in the evaluation of fresh entrants, be it the certification of foreign medical
graduates to practise in India, or those keen to pursue postgraduate programmes in diverse
healthcare streams and turn themselves into specialists, National Board of Examinations in Medical
Sciences conducts a number of entrance examinations; defines curricula, standards, and norms of
postgraduate residency training; and conducts exit examinations in each of the many postgraduate
disciplines. Nurturing an avant-garde approach, the board nests the philosophy to build, strengthen
and homogenize standards of postgraduate medical education in the country, and inspire excellence
in learning through a progressive innovative participatory approach. Subliminal to this schema, it
partners today with a robust network of accredited medical institutions both in the public and private
space across India.
