Padma Vibhushan Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy

Founder and chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) in Hyderabad
Dr. Duvvur Nageshwar Reddy is a world-renowned Indian
gastroenterologist, widely recognized for his pioneering
work in therapeutic endoscopy. He is the founder and
chairman of the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG)
in Hyderabad, which has grown under his leadership into the
world’s largest specialized gastroenterology hospital. Born
on March 18, 1956, in Visakhapatnam, Dr. Reddy is a third-
generation physician.
He completed his MBBS from Kurnool Medical College
and earned his MD in General Medicine from Madras
Medical College. He further specialized with a DM in
Gastroenterology from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical
Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. His
clinical expertise centers on therapeutic pancreato-biliary
endoscopy and innovative transgastric endoscopic surgeries.
One of Dr. Reddy's most significant contributions to global
medicine is making advanced endoscopic procedures
accessible and affordable. In 1994, he established AIG with
a focus on day-care units for endoscopic procedures-a
revolutionary concept in India at the time.
His research has led to over 1,000 publications in
international peer-reviewed journals, and he has been
instrumental in training endoscopists worldwide. His
extraordinary career is marked by numerous prestigious
accolades.
Notably, he is the first Indian doctor to receive all three
Padma Awards: the Padma Shri (2002), the Padma Bhushan
(2016), and the Padma Vibhushan (2025). Internationally,
he received the Rudolf V. Schindler Award in 2021 from the American Society for Gastrointestinal
Endoscopy (ASGE), often described as the "Nobel Prize of Endoscopy."
He has also served as the Chairman of the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) Research Committee.
Beyond his clinical and academic achievements, Dr. Reddy is known for his philanthropic vision,
ensuring that a significant portion of medical care at AIG is provided free of charge to the
underprivileged, reinforcing his commitment to social responsibility in healthcare.
